www stands for world wide web, but what does it mean, and what is it ?

Ok, the obvious part of this question first:-

World wide - the web can basically be accessed in every country in the world.

Web - The Web is part of the Internet that can be displayed in a Web Browser (Note the Internet is more than just the World Wide Web*.) The Web commonly consists of Web Pages, such as this one, that are linked together by hyperlinks (links). The Web Pages can contain text, images and multimedia (sound, video, games). The term Web originated due to the way the web pages are linked together.

* The Internet is the term given to the network of computers connected together, the Internet is much more than just the world wide web and includes file transfers, newsgroups, email etc.
