How were websites created?
General Disclaimer - Happy Online
would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible
for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work
on some computers and may result in errors - you should only
make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any
consequences that may arise. Websites were first created by scientists/researchers to communicate
reports to each other over a network of computers (Internet).
By developing a simple programming language (HTML) text documents
could be formatted to appear in an application (forerunner to
Modern Web Browser) that could run on any PC/Computer.
So basically early web documents were pages of formatted text
(eg pages that said this text should be Bold, Red,
Italic, etc) that could be opened in an application that
understood the formatting and displayed the text.
Simple stuff, however the impact of displaying text from one
computer on another computer soon took off and websites evolved
from simple text documents to contain images, sound and other
multi-media. (Including E-Commerce Sites, Online Shopping and
Applications that now run in Web Browsers.)
Now virtually every business has a Website and lots of independent
professionals, semi-professionals and amateurs run websites.
They are still largely created by coding HTML (although the
HTML has many more formatting commands than the original language)
- although other coding languages that compliment or do some
of the task previously undertaken by HTML are becoming more
important.
