What is closed source ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

The easiest way to explain closed source is by first understanding open source.

Open Source is computer software (for example programs such as Operating Systems, Databases) where the source code is freely available to other programmers. These programmers can then make adjustments and experiment with the code to improve and develop the original software to suit their needs. Open Source software can therefore lead the way to innovation and development of the original program.

Closed Source is computer software where the code is not made available. If programmers wished to work on the code they would need to approach the software producers and request a licence - if granted then this would typically come at a price.
