What is the future of portals ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

Remember this is only an opinion of Happy Online, unfortunately we can not predict the future - although we can make some guesses.

I think that Portals will always be about and as a general rule they will be the Websites that are provided by the big ISPs. The Big ISPs make a lot of money through keeping their user on or close to the default homepage that is set when they sign up with the ISP.

The ISP will therefore try to provide all services that there users may want when going online - therefore the ISPs will continue to provide access to email, games, search, shopping etc.

This is pretty much what already happens, but what next ?

I cant see that there is likely to be much change over the next few years, the biggest development for the Internet at the moment is more users joining up to broadband - this however is not likely to dramatically change Portals.

Obviously, with more people signing up for Broadband the Portals may take advantage of the increased internet speed and start offering more services that depend on Broadband, such as Music/DVD Downloads and streaming Video.

Although Portals have had a tough time in the last three or four years due to slow loading pages, with broadband the issues with speed access for Portals will not be such a big issue and perhaps this will lead to more success for Portals.
