What hardware/software is required to use a modem ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

As far as hardware is concerned, you need the modem, a relatively modern PC, a phone socket and possibly (for external modems) a power cable and power supply.

The Modem will probably come with basic software to enable you to install the device, however you can also install Modems via the Modem option under the Control Panel section of your PC (Control Panel can normally found by selecting start, settings and then Control Panel.)

To connect to the Internet you should be able to pick up a free CD from Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that will contain the software to enable you to install their services and then dial up to open an account.
