What does my Internet Service Provider do ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide users with access to the Internet through a connection to the ISPs computer network.

ISPs will set a user up with an account user name and password and the account holder can connect to the ISPs computer through an Internet Connection (Most commonly dial up modems) - once connection has been acheived the account holder is able to surf the internet.

ISPs virtually always set the user up with an email address that is normally derived from the account holders user name.

ISPs often also provide the account holder with webspace should they wish to have a website - the web site address again is normally derived from the account holders user name.

The services that ISP offer vary considerably and Internet users should be mindfull of the following:-

  • Charges for the service - (Set up and On-going)
  • Customer Service - (Level of support should things go wrong)
  • What services are provided - (Do I need webspace ?)
  • What connection speeds are available ?
  • What payment plans are available ?
  • What times can I access the Internet ?
  • Is access reliable ?- (Some ISPs suffer from constantly busy systems)
