What is a Gateway ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

The Internet term "Gateway" normally means either a Website or a Webpage that has solely been created with the purpose of leading either visitors or search engines to another page or website.

EG. A Website owner/designer could create a page that has lots of content to do with the product they are selling. This page may rank well in search engines and have many visitors - however the main purpose of this page is to lead these visitors on to another page where they can purchase products, sign-up for events etc.

You may also come accross an ISP being called a Gateway - as they give users access to the Internet, therefore they are providing a "Gateway" on to the Internet.

The term Gateway is also often used in computer networks - but basically if you think along the same lines of an object/entity/page/software or hardware that gives or leads to access of a system for another system/user.
