What is a Corporate Portal ?

General Disclaimer - Happy Online would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work on some computers and may result in errors - you should only make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any consequences that may arise.

The words Corporate Portal are often shortend to Coportal.

I have done a search on the Internet and can not find a good definition, so my definition is as follows;- if anyone wishes to challenge this definition then please do using the form below.

I see the Corportal as a development of Companies Intranet models, companies (service industry companies of a reasonable size) often have an Intranet site, an Intranet site is basically web pages that only employees of the company can access (e.g. a limited access Internet).

The Intranets in their current form basically give staff access to company news, announcements, telephone lists etc.

The Corportal takes the Intranet further by providing a front end to all services/databases etc that the member of staff will need to perform their job function. (More and more database are having a Web-page front end that employees can use.)

Areas of this Corportal can also be opened up to users from outside the company (with relevant controls), such as customers - eg a customer can query the same screens that the company employee would, for example to check a cash balance on a bank account.
