How can I stop access into restricted websites on my system
?
General Disclaimer - Happy Online
would like to remind all visitors that they are responsible
for their own computer settings - some suggestions may not work
on some computers and may result in errors - you should only
make changes to your computer if you are comfortable with any
consequences that may arise. Internet Explorer has a built in function to control the content
viewable on the Internet - however you will have to judge for
yourself how succesful the restrictions that can be applied
are.
In Internet Explorer 6 you can access the area where you can
set the level of content by selecting the tools drop down menu
from the top of the browser window followed by Internet Options.
If you then select the Content Tab at the top of the Internet
Options window you should see an area headed up Content Advisor
which includes an Enable Button.
If you select the Enable Button you will be presented with
a further window where you can set various content filters.
You can control content by setting ratings for the different
types of content that you may like to control (Note that these
ratings are based on known websites or websites that make themselves
known to have content of a sensitive nature.)
You also have the option of creating lists of Websites you
approve or disapprove.
Some of the more advanced options under the Content Advisor
section enable you to find and use other organisations that
Rate Websites.
When you OK or Apply these changes you are normally asked to
enter a password which you will need to remember should you
wish to make changes to the level of access at a later stage.
As well as the controls built in to Internet Explorer there
are some software packages that are designed to keep people
Safe Online - a brief description of some of the more well known
software programs of this nature can be found under the Safe
Online section of Happy Online.
