What does co mean in a UK URL ?

When I first started using the internet I always though that co in the url for UK domain names meant Care Of.

However the co actually stands for the same as a com stands for - A Company or Commercial Website. (co = company or commerical, com = company or commercial - I dont know why UK urls did not become www.domain.com.uk - I guess the co sounds better!)

Just to complete the picture, other domain types (ac, org, gov) also have a .uk after the address, eg www.domain.gov.uk - the v does not disappear on UK versions of these domains.
