Searching the Web with Google, Altavista, Teoma, Alltheweb and other Search Engines

There are now over 3 billion web pages on the Internet and search engines provide an easy way to reach these pages.

By typing in your search term in the input box the search engine will look through its catalogue of pages to find a suitable match.

Search engines work in very different ways and typing in your search term in one engine can give you very different results from another engine.

Listed to the right are some of the major search engines, some of these are household names. While Others are probably less well known but are up and coming search engines.

Try searching for yourself, type in your term in anyone of the search boxes to the right and click on the search or find button. After trying your term in one search engine try it in another and see the difference in the results.

While search engines are an excellent way of locating web pages sometimes it is hard to get the result you want, this is where Directories can prove more effective, for example if you are searching for an Estate Agents by clicking on the Estate Agents section within a directory you find the results you want straight away - however typing in Estate Agents in a search engine can result in articles and news on Estate Agents as well as the Estate Agents themselves.
