The branches of this small: spreading deciduous shrub form an attractive herringbone pattern. An excellent groundcover plant for a sunny border: it looks most effective grown flat against a wall.Position: full sun or partial shadeSoil: moderately fertile: well-drained soilRate of growth: average to fast-growingFlowering period: MayFlower colour: whiteOther features: the seeds of the fruit may cause mild stomach upset if ingested; the bright red berries are highly attractive to birdsHardiness: fully hardyGarden care: In late spring or early summer after flowering lightly cut back any branches that spoil the symmetry of the plant and apply a generous 5-7cm (2-3in) mulch of well-rotted garden compost or manure around the base of the plant.
